F-Standard Results

Ben Runkel
Congratulations To Ben Runkel

The Port Pirie Open Prize Meeting on Sunday 17th of April was very well attended with 62 shooters taking part, of which 16 were in "F" class standard. The weather was near perfect with pleasant warm conditions and what appeared to be an innocent breeze drifting in from the left for the opening 500 yard range. Some good scores were recorded early on before the breeze started to do its usual Pirie thing and start flicking around in direction and changing in strength at the same time. It was still fairly readable though and most got through it ok.

Things got a bit tricky at 600 yards when there was a bit more strength and change to deal with and some shooters didn't seem to handle it all that well. It was at 700 yards where most of the fun started with flags and mirage giving good indications but it didn't necessarily agree with what was happening at the target end. Plenty of times shots would be out one side , followed by the next out the other side and on many occasions they weren't just slipping out into the five ring. There were quite a few puzzled looks on the faces of some of the "F" classers as they came off the mound wondering what they had to do to keep them in the six ring with any consistency.

Matt Roberts picked up the only 60 on the day and there was a sprinkling of 59's at the first two ranges including one from Andrew Arboit of Port Pirie shooting in his first prize meeting. Young Alex Kerin put on a good show, also in his first prize shoot and picked up the encouragement award at the presentations. After all the scores were tallied it was Ben Runkel from Port Pirie that took out the win by a handy 4 points after shooting consistently well at all three ranges. This year Port Pirie had a nice array of trophies on offer as well as range medals for all classes and with the weather the way it was no one really claimed a monopoly on those either. It was a great day with a top field in "F" class and some good competition was had over all three ranges.
